Ingredients For Peppermint Patties Made At Home

While there are a few different peppermint patty recipes out there, the core ingredients for each are the same. You’ll need a chocolate coating to dip the patties in, along with a sweet filling like confectioners’ sugar, butter, and vanilla extract. Here are the basics for each recipe:

  1. Dark Chocolate Peppermint Patties – Dark chocolate is a must for this classic recipe. Use a higher quality chocolate for a richer taste and fewer additives. You’ll also need a sugar filling and powdered sugar for dusting.
  2. Double Dark Chocolate Peppermint Patties – These patties are a rich mix of two types of chocolate. Use a combination of dark, semi-sweet, and milk chocolate for an even tastier treat.
  3. Peppermint Patty Shells – These patties are dipped in a milk chocolate coating. You’ll still need a sugar filling.

How To Make Homemade Peppermint Patties

  1. In a medium mixing bowl with the powdered sugar, add in the sweetened condensed milk and peppermint and vanilla extracts.
  2. Mix this together until a malleable dough is formed.
  3. Coat a clean surface with powdered sugar.
  4. Place the peppermint dough onto the powdered sugar surface and roll out to about a ¼ inch to ½ inch thick, based on preferred thickness.
  5. Cut out the patties with a cookie cutter.

Candy Coating and Wrapping Tips

The chocolate coating on these peppermint patties is important. Not only does it add flavor and texture, but it also holds everything together. You don’t want to bite into a peppermint patty only to have the filling fall out the other end. Depending on the coating recipe you choose, you may need to temper your chocolate.

This is a process where you slowly heat up the chocolate to melt it, then cool it back down so it’s firm enough to dip the patties. For the best results, find a coating recipe that doesn’t need tempering. Here are a few coating recipes to consider:

  • Cocoa Powder – Cocoa powder makes a firm, tasty coating that’s easy to work with. It’s also a low-fat option that’s great for healthy peppermint patties!
  • Cocoa Powder with Coconut Oil – Coconut oil is a healthy fat that adds a nice flavor to the coating. It also makes the coating a bit softer, so it’s easier to bite into.
  • White and Milk Chocolate – While this recipe uses more ingredients, it makes a firmer coating that holds up well in the fridge.
  • White and Milk Chocolate with Corn Syrup – This is the easiest option on the list, with a minimum of ingredients. Use corn syrup in place of water to make a firmer, smoother coating.
