How to Make and Store Valentine’s Rice Krispies

Making the Recipe

The beauty of Valentine’s Day Rice Krispies lies in how simple they are to prepare. All you need are a few everyday ingredients—Rice Krispies cereal, marshmallows, butter, and a bit of food coloring or festive sprinkles for that Valentine’s Day vibe. Simply melt the butter and marshmallows on low heat, stir in a dash of red or pink food coloring, then fold in the cereal. Once everything is well combined, press the mixture into a greased or lined pan and top with festive sprinkles. Allow the Rice Krispies to set, cut them into squares (or get creative with heart-shaped cookie cutters), and voila! Your Valentine’s treats are ready.

Storing Your Treats

To keep your Rice Krispies fresh and chewy, it’s important to store them properly. Place them in an airtight container at room temperature to prevent them from drying out. Avoid refrigerating, as this can make them too hard. When stored in the proper conditions, Valentine’s Rice Krispies will last up to 5 days at room temperature without losing their chewy texture or flavor.

Fun Variations for Valentine’s Rice Krispies

Why stick to the basics when you can get creative? Part of the fun is customizing your Rice Krispies to make them uniquely yours. Here are a few ideas to try:

  • Add Chocolate: Drizzle melted white or dark chocolate over the top for an indulgent touch.
  • Sprinkles Galore: Use heart-shaped sprinkles or red and pink nonpareils to really amp up the festivity.
  • Flavor Upgrades: Mix in a splash of vanilla extract or almond extract to enhance the flavor.
  • Colorful Layers: Divide the marshmallow mixture and color one batch red, one pink, and one white, then press them into the pan in layers for a striped effect.
  • Shape it Up: Use a heart-shaped cookie cutter to create adorable, themed treats. Tie them up in individual bags for charming party favors.

With these variations, you can make your Rice Krispies just as unique as your Valentine celebration.

Tips and Tricks for Perfect Rice Krispies

Creating perfectly chewy, gooey Valentine’s Rice Krispies isn’t hard, but a few tips can take your treats to the next level:

  1. Use Fresh Ingredients– Invest in fresh marshmallows and cereal—stale ingredients simply won’t deliver that soft, gooey texture. Trust us, it makes all the difference.
  2. Low and Slow for the Win– Melt the marshmallows and butter over low heat rather than rushing it. This prevents burning and ensures everything is smooth and perfectly combined.
  3. Don’t Compress Too Much– When pressing the Rice Krispies into the pan, don’t pack it down too tightly. Over-compressing can make them hard instead of soft and chewy.
  4. Taste Test Your Sweetness– Not a fan of overly sweet treats? Adjust the sweetness by using unsweetened cereal or mixing in slightly less marshmallow for a less sugary version.
  5. Customize with Love– Make these treats meaningful by personalizing them. Add your loved one’s favorite toppings or decorate in their favorite colors.

Ingredients

  • 6 cups Rice Krispies cereal
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 4 cups mini marshmallows
  • 1 cup light pink candy melts
  • 1/2 cup fuschia pink candy melts
  • White sprinkles

Instructions

  1. Line a 9x13 inch baking pan with foil. Be sure the foil overhangs slightly on each side.
  2. In a large pot, melt the butter and mini marshmallows together over low-medium heat, stirring often.
  3. Once the mixture is melted, remove the pot from heat.
  4. Pour the Rice Krispies cereal into the pot and mix into the melted butter and marshmallows thoroughly.
  5. Pour the mixture into the lined baking pan. Use the back of a spatula to spread evenly in the pan. Allow the Rice Krispie treats to cool and harden, about 10 minutes.
  6. Lift the Rice Krispies out of the pan by the foil onto a flat surface. Using the heart-shaped cookie cutter, cut out 10-12 hearts from the Rice Krispies.
  7. Melt the light pink candy wafers as directed on the package, then dip each heart halfway in the light pink color. Drip the excess color off, then allow them to harden on a sheet of parchment paper.
  8. Melt the fuschia pink candy melts as directed on the package. Pour the fuschia color into a piping bag or Ziplock bag, then cut the very tip of the bag off. Quickly drizzle the fuschia pink over the light pink color, using a zig-zag movement.
  9. Sprinkle the white sprinkles over the hearts before the drizzle hardens. Allow the treats to harden for about 5 more minutes, then enjoy!

Notes

  • Storage suggestion: Store in an airtight container at room temperature for 1-2 days.
  • Possible substitutions: You can pick the base color, drizzle color, and sprinkles you prefer– the possibilities are endless! You can also insert a dowel rod at the base of the hearts, package them in a treat bag, and tie a ribbon around the bag to hand out as Valentines day gifts.
