Halloween Themed Cake Pops Ingredients

Recipe For Halloween Cake Pops

  1. Begin by preparing cake per the instructions on the box. Be sure to include the standard ½ cup of oil in your cake as this will ensure the cake is moist and will bind together as a cake pop.
  2. When the cake is finished, immediately scoop it out of the pan with a spatula or other utensils. Place the cake in a  stand mixer bowl while it is hot. Be careful to not get burned by the hot cake!
  3. Mix the cake on low speed until it has binded into a ball in the center of the bowl. The cake being both moist and hot will help it stick together. If it is not binding together, you can add in 1-2 tablespoons of frosting to assist. The dough should be the consistency of cookie dough.
  4. Once your cake pop dough is ready, take a heaping single scoop with a small ice cream scoop.
  5. Roll the scoop of cake pop dough into a ball. Place on a sheet of parchment paper.
  6.  Insert the sticks into the cake pop balls.
  7. Freeze the cake pops for one hour.  The frozen cake pops will keep the cake pops from falling apart in the melted chocolate. For this reason, do not take the cake pops out of the freezer until you are ready to decorate.
  8. While the cake pops are in the freezer, cut your licorice lace to the desired lengths for legs. I used three on each side at about 1 inch in length.
  9. When the cake pops are about to come out of the freezer, add 2 cups of chocolate Candy Melts into a small bowl. Follow directions on the package to melt. Most candy melts will advise you to melt by defrosting in the microwave until melted. Be sure to never add any liquids to your melting candy. If the candy is not smooth enough after melting, add a teaspoon of oil at a time and stir.
  10. After the candy has melted, let it sit for 3-5 minutes to slightly cool. It will stay melted in this time frame.
  11. Taking one or two cake pops out of the freezer at a time, begin decorating by spooning the melted chocolate over the cake pop. Shake to even out the chocolate.
  12.  Immediately place the candied eyeballs candies where desired while the chocolate is still wet. Place the licorice lace legs as well. If the chocolate hardens before you can place the licorice, simply dip the end in the chocolate and place it against the cake pop as usual.
  13. Set the cake pop on parchment paper to allow the chocolate to harden for 5-10 minutes. Do not move or bump the cake pops during this time as the licorice may fall. Repeat with the other cake pops.
  14. If at any point the melting chocolate is not smooth and of liquid consistency, you can add them back to the microwave on defrost to return to a more workable consistency.
  15. Store cake pops in the fridge in a ziploc or covered container until ready to serve.

Cake Pops with Cake Mix?

I enjoy making everything from scratch, but for fun food ideas like making cake pops for Halloween, I frequently use a boxed cake mix and icing from a can. It goes by so much faster!

Can I Make These Cake Pops Ahead of Time?

The cake can be prepared a day in advance. Maintain at room temperature while covered. The cake pops can be frozen for up to 6 weeks or kept in the refrigerator for up to 2 days.

Once the coating has fully dried, you can freeze the finished cake pops for up to 6 weeks. Then thaw overnight in the refrigerator.

Why Are My Cake Pops Cracking?

Your Cake Pops For Halloween may be shattering because of extreme temperature variations. If the cake balls are too cold and the melted candy melt is too hot, the cake balls will expand and then contract, causing the coating to split. Make sure the coating isn’t scorching hot when you dip your cake into it to avoid this happening. Before dipping, let your coating cool for a few minutes.
